The Ministry of Sport is delighted to welcome Morgan Smith, new Sports Ministry Intern until July.
Morgan has studied sports science at Nottingham Trent University for the past four years. Originally from rural Hampshire, he was brought up within a Christian household who attended their local parish church. This gave him the foundations on which he has tried to base his life. During his time at university he further developed his passion for Christian work, particularly outreach. This has included overseas mission trips as well as being involved in programs closer to home here in Nottinghamshire.
This year working as in intern within the Ministry of Sport will present an opportunity for Morgan to combine his two biggest passions, his faith and sport. He is keen to explore the ways in which God can speak to people through sport and how it can be a tool to reach those that are unaware of the life changing news of Jesus Christ. Alongside this he is excited to participate in the Younger Leadership Collage (YLC) to further develop his skills as a leader within not just sports ministry but all walks of life.
Morgan is also a keen cricketer, playing for Bingham CC, and helps manage St Nics FC in the Derby Church League.
While Morgan gets stuck into his new role, we've already started the search for his successor, due to start in September 2019.
Could this be you?

The Ministry of Sport are looking for an intern for an exciting 10-month ministry opportunity. The internship is a unique opening for a Christian with a passion for and involvement in sport to help develop the Ministry of Sport, and to themselves receive excellent practical experience, networking opportunities and personal development.
The Ministry of Sport is part of the Church of England diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and has a vision to equip Christians and local churches to engage effectively with sports ministry in order to live and speak contextually of the good news of Jesus Christ.
The internship involves living in Nottingham, serving local churches and learning about sports ministry from hands-on practical experience. There is teaching input one day a week from the diocesan Younger Leadership College.
At a time where sports ministry continues to be on the rise in the UK, this position, the only of its kind within the Church of England, would be a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a passion for God and sport.
A volunteer would work with the Ministry of Sport’s Sport Ambassador to serve and encourage churches and individuals in Nottinghamshire to discover Christ in and through sport. This includes:
- supporting networks of sporty Christians in their own faith, interaction with sport culture and evangelism - building relationships with key members of local churches and other organisations - regularly informing contacts of developments, ideas and resources via webpage and the production of relevant publicity - producing evangelistic events and resources appropriate for the culture of sport - strategising to help churches make the most of the mission opportunities presented by major national and local sporting events - creative thinking about how churches can tailor ministry initiatives to suit their communities - participating in a local sports club and role-model living and speaking out their faith appropriately in that context - engaging with training, conferences and national networking opportunities
A key part of the internship is the opportunities it aims to create for the intern to gain practical experience in the field of sports ministry, and take on individual projects aimed at building relationships between churches and local organisations.
An intern’s schedule is flexible, to include working alongside the Sport Ambassador (including attendance of planned evening and weekend events), pursuing and building sports ministry projects, participation in teaching resources, conferences and involvement in a local sports team. Participation in the Younger Leadership College will be one day a week.
Younger Leadership College:
The Younger Leadership College exists to equip, resource and commission 1000 younger leaders between 15-30 by 2023, to fulfil their God-given calling as leaders and disciples in culture and in the church. Through a range of innovative programmes, courses and networks, the College will invest in the development of younger leaders within 4 curriculum areas of discipleship, character, leadership and culture.
Qualities looked for:
The Ministry of Sport is looking for a Christian between the ages of 21 and 30 who has a history of being committed to a sports club and a church, is in a position to commit to a local sports club in Nottinghamshire, has clear communication skills, is able to think strategically, has confidence in event planning and delivery, and is a willing and capable learner.
The internship would best suit a graduate but we are willing to consider any level of post-college student. A passion for and involvement in sport and sports ministry is essential.
A relevant qualification or substantial experience of sports ministry is desirable, as is a UK driving licence, given the large area the Ministry of Sport covers.
What previous interns have said:
